Patience is the watchword for luckless Craig Thomson PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 08 February 2010 11:37

By Barry Anderson - The Evening News Thommo

IMPATIENCE is often a hindrance to the development of young footballers, particularly those returning from serious injury. Hearts teenager Craig Thomson, therefore, is an exception to the rule. Since damaging cartilage in his left knee during December's victory over Celtic, he has done everything by the book of physio Rob Marshall and the Riccarton medical staff. No chances taken, no corners cut.

Many in Thomson's predicament would take it upon themselves to accelerate their first-team return. His debut season at first-team level had gone swimmingly until the injury, but the full-back has tempered his enthusiasm for his own benefit. A knee operation was deemed essential, causing him to miss Hearts' most consistent run of league form this season under former manager Csaba Laszlo. He has yet to play, or train, under new incumbent Jim Jefferies and had to handle the frustration of watching from the sidelines as his club was eliminated from the Co-operative Cup by St Mirren on Tuesday night.

Gary Mackay: Goncalves too good to be left on the Hearts sidelines PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 08 February 2010 11:35

By Gary Mackay - The Evening News Jose

THERE'S no doubt in my mind that it would be better for Hearts if Jose Goncalves was available for selection. I feel that the club needs as many of their good players available as possible. This time last year, Bruno Aguiar and Christos Karipidis were in a similar situation, where everyone knew they probably wouldn't be staying on, yet they were still allowed to play until the end of the season and they didn't let anyone down.

I don't know the ins and outs of it, but I believe the one specific difference is that Hearts have actually offered Jose a new contract. Nevertheless, it's the player's prerogative whether or not he wants to sign that contract.  Jim Jefferies may indeed have made the decision himself that he if the player doesn't want to sign, he won't be playing, or maybe the decision was already made before he came in, and, I think it's fair to say, not necessarily by the previous manager. Unfortunately, if you inherit that situation then you just have to get on with it.

Jim Jefferies in close call PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 07 February 2010 12:30

By Kenny MacDonald - The News of the World JJ

JIM JEFFERIES has revealed he was sounded out about another manager's job - as he was driving to Tynecastle to speak to his new club. The new Hearts boss says he was contacted last Friday about speaking to an English side about their vacant managerial appointment - but told the middle man that Hearts was the one job he wouldn't be able to turn down if he was offered it.

The veteran manager had been looking forward to a break from football after 22 years in management. Yet he couldn't resist the lure of a return to Tynecastle following Csaba Laszlo's sacking.  Jefferies said: "I was looking for a break from the game, maybe getting a game of golf. I'd been in it for 22 years and I think I deserved a break. I was looking for a couple of months, I got a couple of weeks! I even thought that if I got an offer for a job I might have turned it down - but I'd never have turned this job down. (Click Read More)...

Csaba Laszlo vows to pay to watch Hearts and stay where he is PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 07 February 2010 12:25

By Ewing Grahame - Scotland on Sunday

CSABA Laszlo doesn't do regret. The 45-year-old feels his removal as Hearts manager by owner Vladimir Romanov nine days ago was unwarranted. But he remains as upbeat as ever, talking 19 to the dozen about a variety of subjects. Mainly about football. His experience at Tynecastle has not left him disillusioned and he intends to get back in the saddle as soon as possible. That does not mean, however, that Laszlo no longer cares about the Edinburgh club.
Indeed, the Romanian was at pains to point out that he remains a passionate supporter and says he will pay in at Parkhead on Wednesday to watch his former charges take on Celtic. He has still to sort out compensation for his dismissal and admits to having a lump in his throat as he watched his old side take on St Mirren last midweek. "I was sorry that I was not there to lead the players in the Co-operative Insurance Cup semi-final against St Mirren," he said. (Click Read More)...

Hearts poised to cash in on Stephen Husband deal PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 06 February 2010 12:19

By Barry Anderson - The Evening News Hubby

HEARTS have included a ten per cent sell-on clause in the deal which took midfielder Stephen Husband to Blackpool before last month's transfer deadline. The 19-year-old signed a two-and-a-half year contract with the English Championship club, with the fee reported south of the Border as an initial £25,000 rising to £100,000 with add-ons. Hearts believe Husband has enough potential to progress in England and were keen to insert a clause securing them ten per cent of any future transfer fee.

The player will also receive ten per cent should he move on, with Blackpool retaining the remaining 80 per cent. "I think the football up in Scotland and down here is a lot different. Hopefully, I can fit in okay," said Husband. "There are some top players here. There were good players at Hearts as well but I think I'll do well here and learn from the experience.

Ryan Stevenson in Jim Jefferies' plans for Celtic match PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 08 February 2010 11:32

By Martin Dempster - The Evening News Ryan

HEARTS new boy Ryan Stevenson could be set for a baptism of fire against Celtic at Parkhead on Wednesday after he wasted no time catching Jim Jefferies' eye in his first training session with the Tynecastle club. Jefferies snapped up the 25-year-old midfielder for a reported £20,000 from Ayr United in the final few hours of the January transfer window and is hoping Stevenson can make his mark in the SPL.

"While Ryan isn't what I'd call a major signing, I've always had an eye for these sorts of player in lower divisions and I'm confident he can do a good job for us," said Jefferies of a player who started his career with Chelsea before spending five seasons at St Johnstone. "Ryan will probably go from being a big fish in a small pool to a small fish in big pool.  With no disrespect at all to Ayr, he's going to be playing with players at this club who are better. He's not a Mickey Cameron by any means in terms of getting forward.

I'll have to reprogramme Hearts players in bid to lift their spirits, says Jim Jefferies PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 07 February 2010 12:27

By Gordon Waddell - The Sunday Mail

JIM JEFFERIES last night admitted he won't just have to coach Hearts - he will have to reprogramme them. The new Jambos boss will be putting in overtime on the training ground AND in the dressing room as he attempts to lift a side of automatons he feared were unliftable. A side so joyless they had forgotten how to celebrate a win, far less mourn a defeat. But while Tuesday night's slump to St Mirren in the Co-op Cup semi-finals might have been soul-destroying for the fans, it gave him hope - because he finally saw his players hurting.

The man who took Hearts to Cup glory in 1998 said: "It's not easy when they're programmed to play a certain way. I'm not saying it's wrong but it wasn't the greatest to watch. "After losing my first game at St Johnstone I wondered if the players were liftable - especially after hearing from people at the club I trusted. (Click Read More)...

Laryea Kingston given Hearts lifeline by Jim Jefferies PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 06 February 2010 12:21

The Daily Record

NEW Hearts boss Jim Jefferies has told Laryea Kingston he still has a future at the club. The Ghana international fell out of favour under former manager Csaba Laszlo but Jefferies says the slate has been wiped clean. "We have had a long chat - I think it has to be fresh start for everybody," Jefferies told Hearts News. "Things have been said and done to him but we have to get him back on track as when he first came to Hearts everyone agreed he was a real capture.

"The aim is to get him back with his head right and get him back competing and giving full value. It has to be a two-way thing, though - it's not just me who wants that, he has to want it, too. If you are going to work together, you work together as a partnership." Kingston is set to join up with the rest of the squad on Monday following his latest injury setback, and Jefferies believes he can win over the fans again.

Hearts' Andrew Driver will add a different dimension to Levein's Scotland squad PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 06 February 2010 12:14

By Colleen Strachan Andy

CRAIG LEVEIN believes Andrew Driver will add a new dimension to his Scotland squad – and reckons there are more Edinburgh-based players just waiting to force their way into the international fold. The new national boss signed Driver for Hearts when he was in charge at Tynecastle and was delighted when the English-born winger, who qualifies for Scotland through his schooling, pledged his future to Scotland after a face-to-face meeting earlier this week

Levein has watched Driver's career progress from afar and is looking forward to working with him again on the international scene. He said: "I spoke to him on the phone and then had a meeting with him and his father. Everything was very positive, I asked him if he wanted to have time to think about it but he said no, and that he had already made his mind up.
